Edwards George of Maidenhead Berkshire England
« on: Saturday 26 May 12 06:17 BST (UK) »
Edwards George - Born Maidenhead Berkshire, England.

Birth approx 1811.

Father was James Edwards - a gardener.

George came to Australia and was married in the Wide Bay [Maryborough] area of Queensland sometime from 1840's to Mary Kennedy who was born in Nenagh, Tipperary, Ireland around 1818.

I'm trying to find any record of George in Berkshire [birth] or any connection to his father or family.
Also any record of George coming to Australia prior to the 1840's.
Any other Edwards families who may have a connection.

Appreciate any help.

Hi

Not sure how helpful this is...

Nothing on the birth yet as the name is quite common; will probably need someone with more Berkshire knowledge.

There is some criminal activity, assuming I have the right George Edwards:
George Edwards aged 14y., est. birth y 1812, Trial at Middlesex 1826, larceny, 3 months and whipped.
George Edwards aged 22y., est. birth y 1811, Trial CCC Old Bailey, 3 Jan 1833. Unable to read the original details of the offence, looks like 7 y. if so must have got off early if next appearance is right. Served time on the hulk 'Cumberland', moored at Chatham.
George Edwards aged 28y., Trial at CCC Old Bailey, 27 Nov 1838, horse stealing, 10y. trans. Unable to work out which ship he sailed on yet.

I can't find a marriage for George & Mary, however, there are 2 entries for children on the Family Search site:

Hi

I had to recheck this one, the uncertainty of George's birth, parentage and the niggle that you said he 'came' to Australia (not transported); too many unanswered questions. I checked out some of the trees on Ancestry and became even more unsure.

Was this George's Parents?
Source, IGI (extracted records):
8 Dec 1782 James Edwards s. of William Edwards & Ann, Cookham, Maidenhead, bap.
12 April 1804 James Edwards & Maria White, Cookham, mar.

Was he a convict or did he emigrate?

Regards
Geoff

G'day Geoff.

Only just found your replies which are appreciated.

The George Edwards I am chasing doesn't leave a lot clues as to his origins.

Finding definite information regarding George’s birth details has been rather elusive as births were not registered prior to 1838 in England.  The Author therefore had to rely on various other documents to establish some idea of those details.  Sadly the information given on some of these are contradictory as well.

The following reveal that George’s birth place was Maidenhead, Berkshire, England, though establishing a birth year is difficult as the various ages given for George at the time of his children’s births are all over the place as well as the year of his marriage.

The birth certificate of George’s son James Michael gives the following information.  George himself was the informant in 1857.

Father’s birthplace ……….          Maidenhead, Berkshire, England
Father’s age           ……….          33 years     [Actually 46]
Date of Marriage   ……….          1845

The birth certificate of George’s son Michael gives the following information.  George’s wife Mary was the informant in 1860.

Father’s birthplace ……….         Maidenhead, Berkshire, England
Father’s age           ……….         42 years     [Actually 49]
Date of Marriage   ……….         1843

The birth certificate of George’s son Edward gives the following information.  George himself was the informant in 1862.

Father’s birthplace ……….          Berkshire, England
Father’s age           ……….          45 years     [Actually51]
Date of Marriage   ……….          1847

The birth certificate of George’s son William John gives the following information.  George’s wife Mary was the informant in 1864.

Father’s birthplace ……….         Berkshire, England
Father’s age           ……….         50 years     [Actually 53]
Date of Marriage   ……….          1845

George died in 1890 and his son William was the informant.  George’s death certificate shows his birthplace as Berkshire, England and that his age was 82 years at death and that he was 32 years when he married.   The above is all very confusing and leaves us to assume that George was probably born somewhere between 1808 and 1818.

1843/47 – Married in Wide Bay, Queensland.
The following records show that George would marry a young Irish lass by the name of Mary Kennedy from Nenagh, Tipperary, Ireland, in the Wide Bay district of Queensland.

A search for records regarding Mary’s origins in the Colony and how she came to be in the Wide Bay Village proved fruitless and trying to find support for oral history through various family members in regards to the story that she may have come out to the Colony with her father, who was said to be a Soldier, and her sister, proved the same.  It is thought that her father and sister returned to Ireland. Mary’s age of birth and their actual marriage date presents a problem also, as a number of documents vary with their information.

The birth certificate of Mary’s son James Michael gives the following information.  George was the informant in 1857.

Mother’s birthplace ……….          Ireland
Mother’s age           ……….          32 years     [Actually 39]
      Date of Marriage   ……….            1845
Place of Marriage ……….           White Bay New South Wales ?

The birth certificate of Mary’s son Michael gives the following information.  Mary was the informant in 1860.

Mother’s birthplace ……….         Kenaugh?, [Nenagh] Tipperary Island
Mother’s age           ……….         34 years     [Actually 42]
Date of Marriage   ……….           1843
Place of Marriage ……….            Roman Catholic Church Wide Bay

The birth certificate of Mary’s son Edward gives the following information.  George was the informant in 1862.
Mother’s birthplace ……….          Nenagh, County Tipperary Ireland
Mother’s age           ……….          38 years     [Actually 44]
Date of Marriage   ……….            1847
Place of Marriage ……….            Wide Bay Queensland

The birth certificate of Mary’s son William John gives the following information.  Mary was the informant in 1864.

Mother’s birthplace ……….         County Tipperary, Ireland
Mother’s age           ……….         39 years     [Actually 46]
Date of Marriage   ……….           November 1845
Place of Marriage ……….            Wide Bay Queensland

As you can see, not much help there.

Looking at George and Mary’s death certificates to establish some idea of those details proved contradictory as well.

George died in 1890 and his son William was the informant.  George’s death certificate shows his birthplace as Berkshire, England and that his age was 82 years at death.  The death certificate indicates that George was 32 years when he married.  Simple calculations show that his marriage would have been in 1840.   Confusing eh?

Mary died in 1912.  The informant shows her birthplace as Ireland and that her age was 94 years at death.  This would indicate that Mary was born in 1818.  The death certificate also indicates that Mary was 22 when she married George which would put her marrying George in 1840.  More confusion, but consistent with George’s death details.
