Marriage CHARLES FLIPPENCE & EMILY WAITE
« on: Monday 28 May 12 09:16 BST (UK) »
I am trying to work out the parents of Jasper Worthy Flippence (born 1861 Milton Wiltshire, died 1918 Burbage Wilts). I know his father is Charles Flippence and I know his mother is Emily. I need to know Emily's maiden name however I am unable to find confirmation of their marriage. Charles Flippence is a widow on the 1871 census and I think Emily's death is 1865. Charles is remarried to Eliza by 1881 & Jasper is still living with them. The name EMILY WAITE (or EMILY ANNE WAITE) keeps coming up on other people's trees as being Charles Flippence's wife (married Oct Q 1848 Devizes). However, when I view this record and click to see other people on the page, so I can link the 2 together, the name Charles Flippence isn't there. I'm very confused. Can anyone help me please? :)

I think I would ignore the 1848 marriage!

December qtr 1848, Devizes has the following names:
Carpenter, Robert
Giddings, Mary Ann
Master, Anne
Tasker, Robert
Tilly, Joseph
Waite, Emily

That's 3 grooms, and 3 brides! Everthing tied up nicely!

Not all marriages (& births & deaths) were registered in the early days of Civil Registration, as there were no penalties for failing to do so!
Like you, I can't find the marriage :(

Yes, that's what I thought. But on Ancestry & Genes, the amount of different public member trees that have this marriage as Jasper Worthy Flippence's parents is unreal. They must be able to see something that I can't. I just don't understand it. Thanx for having a look anyway.

Hi,

Are you able to contact one of the tree owners and ask them where they found the details?

It could be that one guessed and the rest just copied;   or that between church/register office and the GRO the details got lost.    :-\

Hi Nanny Jay and thanks for the reply. I so wish I could contact the tree owners, but I would have to have an annual membership and I can't afford it yet. I have a couple of credits left on the pay as you go system, but it doesn't allow you to contact other members. There are just too many trees with this marriage on it to ignore it really. It's so frustrating.
Thanks also to Ray, for the Tasker info. Your help is really appreciated.

Don't rely on other people's trees; they are often full of errors.   And just reading your last post - because the error is on lots of trees still doesn't mean it's right. they may have all copied it from each other.   Happens a lot.

Marriage from freebmd  (searched for a Charles Flippence and an Eliza  -  phonetic spelling on)

Dec 1873, district Pewsey, vol 5a page 377

Charles Flippance
Elizabeth Rececca Waite (is one of the spouses)

(note spelling of Flippance/Flippence)

Thanx Silvery, I've just had a look at that. In 1871 Charles Flippence was widowed and then in 1881 he was married again and his new wife (good few years younger than him) was called Eliza. This marriage in 1873 is ten years after Jasper Worthy Flippence was born. I just wonder where are all these trees are getting the name Emily Ann Waite from. Eliza (2nd wife) was born in Chatham Barracks and Emily (1st wife) was down as being born in Milton. Charles and Emily had at least 5 children that I know of and then years later he has three more with his new wife Eliza. I just feel uneasy about ruling Emily Ann Waite out completely.

Birth

Dec 1861  (from freebmd)
Jasper Worthy Flippence

He was born too late to be included in the 1861 census.   By 1871 father is a widower.   How do you know Jasper's mother is Emily ?
