George Davis & Sarah Ann Corbett - correct marriage?
« on: Monday 28 May 12 10:58 BST (UK) »
I am uncertain whether I have the correct marriage record for my great great grandparents George Davis and (Sarah) Ann Corbett.

1881 census (5117/37/18) shows George living in Bedlington, Northumberland with daughters Mary & Emma. George 1829 Madeley Wood, Shropshire. Mary 1869 Castleford, Yorkshire. Emma 1874 Guide Post, Northumberland.

I have subsequently obtained birth certificates for the girls. Mary was born in 1868 at Whitwood Mere. Emma was born in 1873 at Guide Post. Both birth certificates give the mother as Ann Davis formerly Corbett.

I have a possibility for them in the 1871 census (5133/91/19) in Cowpen, Northumberland. George 1833 Shropshire, wife Sarah A 1840 Worcestershire, Mary 1869 Yorkshire. Right counties for father and daughter and age for Mary. Close to Guide Post where Emma was born a couple of years later. The birth year for George differs from 1881 census, but is consistent with information on his death certificate. He died in 1895 age 61.

The only marriage record I have managed to find for a George Davis and a Corbett is GRO Dec1857 Tenbury 6c 385. Since Tenbury is in Worcestershire this looked a good possibility given the wife’s birthplace on the 1871 census. Sent off for the certificate hoping it would give me a Sarah Ann, but her name is just Sarah and she is age 24 which would give a birth year 1833. The marriage took place on 12 Oct 1857 in the church at Stoke Bliss in Herefordshire, which is just a few miles from Tenbury. However, in addition to the Sarah Ann issue and discrepancies in her age, there is also a problem with George. His age is shown as 45 on the certificate which would put his birth around 1812. Could these be my George and (Sarah) Ann or am I off up a blind alley?

Any suggestions on where to go from here would be welcomed?

Marriage cert shows both George and Sarah as Labourer.
Fathers are Thomas Davis and John Corbett, both Labourers.

This is another reason that I am doubting that this is the right George as mine is a miner.

Hello, If there is a moderator following this board would it be possible to have my original post moved to General? It is not generating much response here, which may be because Tenbury is near the borders of several counties and my Davis/Corbett couple also have links to Shropshire and Northumberland. Perhaps readers of other boards may know something about them.

Tried pressing the moderator link, but was told I cannot report my own post.
Thanks in advance for your help.
