British Army musicians in India

Hi All

I am trying to find some info on my wife's GGrandfather. He was in India 1892-1903 serving with the British Army, I think he was with a Worcestershire or Gloucestershire regiment. He is said to have been with the regiment's band, I do have the info about this but can't find it just at the moment. I have a recollection that the Britsh Library may have some details of the British Army in India but it looks like only officers. Does anyone know if either they or Kew may have details of non officers that could help me?

I have tried to look over Kew's catologue but haven't found anything yet and would appreciate some help.

Hi Ian

You could try Ancestry for pre WW1 medals or Findmypast for pre-WW1 service records. If you do not have a subscription you need to post a name; plus place of birth and approximate date if known.

If you think he may be on a BMD in India you could try the IGI. They have several thousand Indian church records online now. Or, again with FindMyPast. you could do a search for regimental BMDs.

Thanks for that, he was William John Came b1874 in Henbury, Bristol. I have got an Ancestry subscription but can't find anything but I'm probably not putting in the correct info!

hi,,he was in the Prince Alberts {Somerset Light Infantry}  from 1892-1904

served in Gibraltar,India.    receieved Indian Medal with clasp for Punjab frontier 1897 -1898

I've just bought a few credits and looked at the records you pointed me towards. They are excellent, they have proved the family belief of him being in India as a bandsman. Interestingly as well, it proves his father was probably dead as he gives his next of kin as his grandfather. All I need to find now is when/where his father died!
