Crew members at sea in 1911 Census
« on: Wednesday 30 May 12 12:03 BST (UK) »
Would anyone know how I can find an engineer who was at sea at the time the 1911 English Census was taken? His name was Robert Wilkin (b) 1879 at Gateshead Co. Durham.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi,
Was Robert married by 1911 and if so what was his wife's name. He may not have been at sea.

John

Thank you dawnsh, t mo, softly softly and Stan.

Robert Wilkin was definitely in the Merchant Navy as an Engineer, he eventually arrived in Australia sometime after 1911 for I have the various ship records which he sailed on after that time. The National Maritime Museum at Greenwich has also supplied some documentation which was extremely useful. The only gap I have in his career is where did he undertake his apprenticeship in Sunderland in the mid to end 1890's, and on what ship, and year did he arrive in Australia. He was born in 1879 at Gateshead, Durham and died at Brisbane in 1954. He never married.
I also have a photograph of him dressed in the uniform of the "Wavy Navy" which would have been taken between 1903 and 1906.

Thank you for all your help.
