Thanks Ken. If a regiment was posted, did they all go? I am trying to work out a timeline for an ancestor.

About 90% went. the rest stayed as a Depot in the British Isles

If you are interested in an individual it is always best to post a name, plus place and date of birth (if known). As you never known what people can find for you.

And if anyone has a marriage/birth saying a man was a soldier they need to post the month as well as the year. Because the 'army year' did not run January to December.

This is the conundrum. I believe his  name was Robert Hewitt and he was inIreland in 1848 and in  India in 1851 because his children were born there. They had 1 child in Ireland and 3 children in India.  Alas three children died ( all this info  from lovely people on this website). the  70 th regiment went to New Zealand in 1861 on the Louisa, Daniel Rankin and Minden
His son wrote about how he got to New Zealand and always said his fathers name was Alfred on certificates etc but it may have been his fathers middle name. I am trying to find Robert in regimental records but i am not sure how to proceed with this. I have ordered certificates re the marriage, births and deaths and I am waiting for them to arrive to see if they shed any more light on this.
Thank you for any help you may give.

HI

I am trying to find out more about a Henry Northcote (Northcott, Norcott etc), it says on his daughters marriage cert in 1885 that he was in the 70th Foot, he had died in Carlow in 1875

I believe I have found a record of another daughters birth in 1847 where he is listed as a private in the 77th in Tralee Barracks

Is it possible to find out more about this man and his family, he likely married in 1845 and his "second" daughter was born in 1861 so is it likely he had more children between 1847 and 1861?

Any help much appreciated

Thanks

Brendan

The 70th foot were posted to India in 1849, were in India in the 1850s (lots of documents)and in 1861 were posted to New Zealand. You can look up records on Family Search and then have it verified through the British Museum Asia section. There are records in NZ if he was posted there and then stayed.

His "second" daughter was baptised in Carlow and the 1901 census says she was born there.
