Bit of a tricky one - Catherine Anderson b.1889
« on: Thursday 31 May 12 15:05 BST (UK) »
Hello, after having a great success with a brick wall in my own tree, with the help of lovely rootschat people -  I'm now looking for help with a friend's brick wall!

She has a Catherine (aka Cassie) Anderson, born 31st March 1889, who she believes went to America in 1902 - 1908. catherine always maintained that her parents were Elizabeth Armstrong and John Anderson, and that she came from Dundee.

However the most likely marriage is 1879
LEITH SOUTH
EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN
692/02 0017

Although I haven't had a look at the image (no credits and no money! :p)
Also, 3 births for Catherine Anderson 1n 1888, 1889 and 1887 in Dundee all proved to have the 'wrong' parents, although of course we only have what she said were her parents to go on.

In regard to census records, the only Catherine that fits is with a family living in Glasgow, and then possibly with the Duff's for 1901. But again, this is just names, nothing else fits.

There was aso possibly a sister who also went to America, but no one ever seems to have met her or have a name for her.

Sorry there's not much to go on! If someone could look up some more births around Edinburgh for me though that would be great, as if that IS the only viable marriage then that seems the best place to start.

As always, any help at all appreciated :) Thank you!

Hi fenifur,
Have you seen the 1891 census entry -
John Anderson born about 1843 in Largo, Fifeshire
Elizabeth    wife born about 1847 Dornoch, Sutherlandshire
Catherine, born 1889 Glasgow

With some other older children they were living at 4 Tureen Street, Glasgow Chalmers. John was an iron moulder.
If this is likely to be the family I can give you the reference and the other childrens' names
Hoey, McLuskey - Scotland & Ireland. Eckersley, Rogerson - Lancashire. McGee - Ireland, Lancashire. Barnes - Bolton, Lancs

Hello,
Yes this is the Glasgow family we've seen, but although the names and Catherine's birth are right, I don't think the Mother's maiden name for this family is Armstrong (although I don't have credits to verify this anymore) and it's also the wrong place :s
Catherine Anderson is so common, as is John and Elizabeth, that I think it's probably likely that this isn't the right family - IF the mother's maiden name is different and what Catherine said about her birthplace is true. :s
Thank you for looking, though :)

I can confirm that there's a public tree in Ancestry showing John Anderson & Elizabeth Armstrong. They  married on 3rd January 1879 in South Leith. If you viewed the marriage certificate it would show John's occupation which would help in finding the family in the censuses.According to the tree, Elizabeth Armstrong was born 24th November 1855 in Edinburgh. Her husband was born c1854 in Leith. I'm having difficulty tracing them in the censuses though!

Did Cassie have siblings?

Did she travel to America alone?

Could her parents have died when she was young and she got the names wrong?

Where did the precise date of birth come from?

flst - I've just had a look, that tree didn't come up in my searches before for some reason! Annoyingly it seems they have eluded the tree owner re the censuses too :s I'll have a look too, as these seem the most liekly couple if the parents names are right.
Sancti - 1) We don't know 2) We don't know 3)We don't know for sure, but think not, people think the sister went out earlier but aren't sure who this was 4)It was in her obituary, and as far as I know, her marraige cert. (She got married in America)
If I had the answers to those this would be so much easier :S
