TIPTON Directories Lookup - William Clarke a Baker & Grocer

Has anyone got access to directories for Tipton please.

Looking for a William Clarke, a Baker of 35 Castle Street, as on 1871 cen with wife Elizabeth also a Baker and children William 11 & Robert 9.

1881 cen William, wife Elizabeth & sons William & Robert are all Bakers, again 35 Castle Street, Tipton

1891 cen William & wife Elizabeth are now Grocers at 141 Park Lane, Tipton
1891 cen son Robert is living with parents above but is a House Painter

son William went into the Iron works

Also looking for entries prior to 1871 cen as I have a problem whereby I have found a William, Elizabeth & William on 1861 @ Monisla ? Field, Tipton but as an Engine Smith    I cannot see how he would have become a Baker - I do know that there are maybe 4 marriages of a William Clarke to an Elizabeth wife in the Staffordshire area, all in short time span of each other and that they also had some same named children in same time span, so this is rather confusing to say the least

I forgot to mention that on 1861 cen at Castle St, Tipton a Henry Bott wife Ann were Bakers there, wondered if this was the same shop/dwelling

Had a look but not sure how much it helps.
Nothing for Henry Bott nut there is a William Clarke baker in the directories.
Jones 1865 High Street tipton William Clarke baker etc
Post Office 1868 Castle Street William Clarke baker
Kelly's 1880 William Clarke baker Owen St and Castle St.
There's then a gap in the directories to Kelly's 1900 which he's not in.
Previous to 1865 no mention either 1861 Harrods directory and I can't see a baker in Castle St but its alphabetical by surname so I might have missed it.
Could he have been an engineer in the mine and been injured and set up a shop?

Thanks for all that info.

As for his occupation earlier, tis a puzzle, I have considered if he was injured, also considered if his wife was
working part-time in a Bakery and that is how they came by their Bakery business. Either way they would have
required some funds for set up costs, unless they bought an up n running business, but by looking at your info their first premises look like High St not Castle St where Henry Bott was.

Strange thing is about this Clarke and Bott is they both appear to have changed occupations by 1871 cen.

I cannot locate Wm Clarke for certain on 1851 census, which he would be single, I think he may have married mid 1850's, but again with 3 other couples of same name tis difficult to be certain which couple. More in depth research I think with these other 3 couples as to where they are on the census's to rule in/out.

I may well come back to you for some more lookups regarding the surnames of these 4 Elizabeth wives, to see if any families are in the Bakery business, as the other theory is that a business was passed on to a dau from her parent/s.

   Re earlier census. The following may be worth considering.. especially the christian name Robert,not that too common a name back then.

He said on some records born Tividale/Rowley, which also makes it a little difficult.

I have now looked at the census and think that the 1851 is hopeful.

Now I don't come from around Staffordshire being a Yorksha lassie, (I do have a dau living there) so can someone tell me...

Was Tividale  in Worcestershire at that time 1824

According to Genuki Rowley Regis this covered Tividale and .... The parish registers of St Michael, Tividale for the period 1874-1972 (Bapts) & 1879-1971 (Mar) are deposited at Sandwell Community History & Archives Service.

It looks like these are the earliest registers according to Wikipedia...

So I am defo looking for a Baptism for William Clarke c1824 Tividale elsewhere, looks like that one at Dudley may well be his, tis the only one possible.

Hi everyone
I am back to picking this family up once again. I think I have found the family now at Farley Street, West Bromwich.
I need to know if Farley St is under/included with Tipton now and if yes, was it on the 1841/51/61 census's or was it seperate within West Bromwich as the only Farley Street coming up on Google maps is listed as within Tipton.

The family consists of:
William Clarke/Clark of Farley St, W.Brom with wife Mary, still no marriage for these two, can anyone help please.
Children: Possibly 10 in total
William 1824 - Ann 1826 - George 1830 - Hannah 1833 - Elizabeth 1835 -
Rebecca 1837 - Lucy 1839 - Job 1840 - John 1841 - Robert 1842

1841 cen has William Clarke, Mary, William, Ann, George, Hannah, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Lucy & Job
1851 cen has William Clarke, widow not stated where Born, William, George, Elizabeth, Rebecca, John & Robert
1861 cen has William Clark, widow born Dudley, Rebecca (Lawrence), Job & Robert all born W.Brom
All abodes at Farley Street, West Bromwich

William snr is stated as an Engineer and Works Engine Coal and son William is stated as Engineer and latterly a Baker.
I think I have found some of the children's baptism's although they do appear to be scattered in different parts of Staffordshire, which seems strange that the family lived in the same street for 30 years
