It isn't unusual for no mother's name to be given in this era.

There are 2 more children

Cecil Paul  christening:    23 Jan 1743   
Margery Paul christening: 05 Apr 1752

All chr DUNBARNEY,​PERTH,​SCOTLAND    parents:   Patrick Paul   

One thing I would mention is that he may have used "Peter" due to the outlawing of the Jacobites (1745).  So it's worth checking "Peter Paul"

I'm interested in any connection to John PAUL who married Rebecca Alexander in Dunbarney in 1736  :)

Do you have any evidence to show that the Magdalen Paul born in Dunbarney in 1730 is the same Magdalen Paul who married John Baxter?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Forfarian,
Sadly I have no evidence the Magdalen born in Dunbarney was married to my Ancestor John Baxter.  Somewhere I found Magdalens Father's given name was "Peter" .  SP I think it is mentioned.  There are two other possible Magdalens in SP -- both Fathers not Peter.  I did notice your comment re Jacobite influence of the time.  Interesting piece of history.
There are possible Magdalen births in Germany & Austria on Ancestry which I cannot access, have only UK & Australia membership.  The names John Baxter & Magdalene Paul were listed as parents on a death certificate ( February 1855) of one of their many children -- SP.

The father of Magdalen Paul b 1730 was Peter or Patrick (the names are interchangeable).

But if that Magdalen isn't in fact yours, the name of her father is irrelevant.

On the other hand, there is a Peter Baxter, father John Baxter, baptised in Blairgowrie in 1764. Blairgowrie is in the eastern part of Perthshire near Alyth, as also for example are Bendochy, Meigle, Coupar Angus and Rattray. Kinloch, Clunie, Lethendy and Caputh are west of Blairgowrie, and Cargill is south.

There's a map here https://maps.nls.uk/view/74400314 showing the parish boundaries.

So could this be a brother of Magdalen? TBH I can't think how to prove it one way or the other :(

A belated thanks for this information Forfarian.  Have just submitted a note to the handwriting rootschatter to interpret part of Helen Baxters Death Certificate.   Am searching for possible clues of Peter Baxter mentioned in your reply.  You are so helpful
