Underwood family
« on: Monday 04 June 12 17:44 BST (UK) »
Hi all

My mum has just returned to the UK from windy Wellington having made a note of a book title

The Underwoods 1734-2006 An early settler family of Wellington by CF Underwood ISBN 9780473109387 or ISBN 0473109387

I've done the normal internet book searches but can't seem to avail myself of a copy.

Any ideas as to where a copy may be purchased would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dawn

Hi Dawn

(... from an ever-so-slightly, breezy Wellington)  :D )

The National Library of New Zealand (in Wellington), has what it describes as, "copy # 3 of a limited edition of 20 copies" of the "The Underwoods".

http://www.natlib.govt.nz/collections/types-of-items/books

> click on link "Books" - Search National Library Catalogue

Perhaps try their "Ask a Librarian" service?   It may be that they can provide you with contact details for the author (if that is likely to be of help to you ?)

Dawn

If you have a look here you will find some info about the Houghtons, married into the Harris family. One of the Houghton daughters married an Underwood, probably the same line as the author of the books.

I have copies of some photos of some of them somewhere too.

Hi all

Thanks for the info.

We do have his contact details but didn't want to trouble him if there isn't a link.

My mother will just have to go straight back to NZ and read a library copy, she won't  mind but my brother might  ;D

We have Underwoods in the maternal tree but Mum was surprised to see the surname so far from home.

Looks like more research required by us on this surname now.

Hi Dawn
Can you get access to Ancestry?
THere are trees on there showing NZ lines back to UK

If you don't and want to give me some names here or by PM I will see if they appear in the NZ WEllington branches

Bye
Althea

Henry James UNDERWOOD was born 20 Aug 1849 according to info.

A Henry James UNDERWOOD birth is registered Sep qtr 1849, Edmonton, which is probably him.

Just wanted to thank you all for the information. I did pass it on to a couple of days ago.

My mum has been on the phone this evening and was so surprised to find this topic while she was googling CF Underwood.  :o Now she knows where all my knowledge comes from. One illusion shattered  ;D
