How far between Rowley Regis and Bloxwich.

My GG Grandfather according to census was born Rowley Regis about 1786.
The only William Russell born 1786 that I've found is Bloxwich.
It doesn't look that close on the map, but it is difficult to know where one district starts and finishes.

Thanks CaroleW

It's obviously too far away to assume it's him. I have no other clues except he married in Birmingham in 1820.

To make matters worse, they took themselves to Kent to live where their first son was born about 1821.

Have you asked for a look up in Rowley Regis PRs? There is an online register available free at archive.org , I did a very quick search  using surname Russell and no  William 1786 (maybe there is a spelling variant?) If  the baptism isn't there what about this  from familysearch.org - even just to rule it out

Willm. Russell  1 Oct 1786 Sedgley (4.9m from Rowley Regis) parents Geo. Russell & Sar.

Thanks for your help Shirl.

All I can do is keep any possible William Russells and hope to find some extra info.
At least one of Williams children was named George so that augers well if his father was George.

Someone told me once that Russell was a prominent name in the area and they wern't good at having their children baptised.
William had four sons in Kent and I haven't found one baptism.

I looked at Archive.org but couldn't work out how to search on it.

Hi there

Some of my ancestors were baptised aged 20yrs so makes searching so long! Try this link , there are 2 earlier volumes as well in case you want to look further back (this one goes up to 1812) plus lots of other Staffordshire parishes

archive.org/details/rowleyregisparis03rowl

if you click on read on line (on the left) there is a search box to search all the text inside the registers - type in russell and variants and hopefully off you go.

Thanks Shirl

that is amazing. Does it have other counties as well?
I'll have to get my head round how you use it.

It does have lots of others, from the home page archive.org type in the search box - parish registers- and there's a list of what they have - pages full! Lots are Phillmores marriages but there are bapt etc too.

Another idea - parents George & Sarah Russell also had other children baptised in  Sedgley just in case names mean something (or not!), from familysearch.org  again - their source Bishops Transcripts Sedgley

John 9 Oct 1788
John 8 Nov 1788 (first John may have died?) - this baptism and the first John are also on freereg.org where it shows George abode Cottd, occupation nailor
Paul 18 Sep 1791

You never know there could be a clue.

Also on freereg.org there is another Willm. bap Sedgley 21 Sep 1783 father John Russell abode G.Wood occupation shoemaker, mother Eliz. There is however a burial for a William in Sedgley 11Apr 1852 aged 68 so this may well be that William

That site is really good.

I had to have a break though as my eyes were going funny searching all the lists of names.
I'll have another go later.

I haven't found any Johns or Pauls in the family but William was an ironmonger so a Nailor is on the right lines.
