« on: Thursday 07 June 12 13:40 BST (UK) »
I will be in Guildford (on foot) at the and of August/start of September this year, and I would be grateful for any information about what easy to reach facilities are there for me to plan on visitting - along the lines of of libraries, county records, FH societies etc which you have experience of.

Thankyou

Kapirin (Siberia 19th Century),

A short train ride away is Woking and the Surrey History centre
http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/recreation-heritage-and-culture/archives-and-history/surrey-history-centre

It is not situated in the middle of town though, about 1 mile from the station  ::)
The train takes 10 minutes and they are reasonably regular.

What records are you after looking at ?

Thanks Rosie - I do have a few Surrey ends to follow up (the only ones I can recall at present are the Linfields of Lingfield in the late 17th century, and some Denmans in Godstone in the 19th century), but mainly what I'm after is a chance to use / assess the subscription services which I understand are free to use at libraries in UK.  I'll be spending some time in Kew at the National Archives / LDS family history centre, but if there is something available more locally it will save me some time.

It's all at the Surrey History Centre, Woking - one stop on the train as Rosies link shows

Surrey Libraries do have access to Findmypast/ Ancestry/ 19th Century Newspapers/ Times Digital Archive but I think you probably need to be a resident and have a Library card.  The Newspaper sites are available from home as well as the library.

Kew is a bit of a hike on public transport but well worth the effort for information that is not online.  I don't know when the LDS will return to its London base.  ::)

Hi

The London LDS should still be at Kew when you are over here.

http://www.londonfhc.org/

You do not need a NA card to use the LDS facilities there, and their home page above shows you what resources are available.  Do get there early as desks/viewers fill up quickly  ;)

Surrey History Centre has FindMyPast and Ancestry, and you should be able to obtain a CARN (County Archive Research Network) card on the day but check with them first as I presume you don't have a UK address.

http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/245870/Surrey-History-Centre.pdf is their leaflet.

Happy hunting!

Lucky I saw this post :) I would have gone steaming up to Kensington to the LDS for my look-ups.  Now I have a one-stop-shop at Kew  ;)
