Cahill Family
« on: Sunday 10 June 12 14:41 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to trace my my great great grandfathers family. His name was Edward Cahill and was born in Kilkenny between 1829 and 1839.He was listed on both 1901 and 1911 census as follows
(1) 1901 Living in Dublin age 62 Born in Kilkenny
(2) 1911 Living in Dublin age 79 Born in Kilkenny
He died in 1916 in Dublin aged 87 on death cert. He married in 1888 in Dublin. The marriage record lists his parents as Edward Cahill and Margaret Borris.Any help or advice on trying to trace these families in Kilkenny would be greatly appreciated.
Gerry.

Hi Gerry

Do you use rootsireland ?

If not, you should, as it shows on the free index your Edward (baptised Edmund - these 2 names were interchangeable) in 1834 in Gowran.

His mother's name was actually Mary.

Here is a sister's marriage

Thanks Tara
I will check out Rootsireland. The marriage you found was Edwards first marriage in 1878.His first wife died and he remarried in 1888.I think his mothers name Margaret or Mary were also interchangeable. His second wife s name was Elizabeth Bamson -another surname I'm finding difficult to research.

Hi there,

I presume you got the surname Bamson from their marriage cert !

Did it give her father's name and occupation ?

This is the family in 1901 and it says that Elizabeth is from Kildare - but Bamson as far as I'm aware is not an Irish name - was her father a military man by any chance ?

Hi Tara
Thanks. On the marriage cert her fathers name was John Bamson and is recorded as being a labourer.I think I will start a thread on the Kildare section of this site to see if anyone has come across this unusual surname

ancestry has some mentions of the surname and some saying born in Ireland (on census') yet I can see nothing.

Hopefully you get a lead soon
