Cancan and I came across what remains of the graveyard of the former Church of St Saviour, Chorlton-on-Medlock. It is at the junction of Upper Brook Street and Plymouth Grove.
The Church was demolished during the 1960’s/1970’s and today there is a grassed mound with a cross on the top marking the site of the Church. Below the original church were large burial vaults so presumably those are still there beneath the mound.
Amazingly there are a good number of gravestones and memorials still in place. We have compiled an index of the MI’s so if anyone is interested in checking names, please feel free to send a PM to Luzzu.
I do hope that if ever the "powers that be" plan the removal of the gravestones, that they have the foresight to arrange to photograph them prior to doing so. It is a shame there is no plaque (or at least we couldn’t see one) giving some information about the former Church. There are some notable burials including Sir James Bardsley and Professor Grace-Calvert.
The burial registers 1836-1932 are available to browse on this link:-
