Civil Registration Search
« on: Wednesday 13 June 12 16:50 BST (UK) »
Hi All
I am struggling to find the civil registration records for a number of my ancestors.  I wondered if anybody else has the same problem.  Were the new registration laws widely ignored at the time?
Specifically I'm looking for the marriages of;
William Sheerin and Catherine Flood (m. about 1885 from census) - Raphoe/Strabane
Daniel Devenny and Margaret Gallagher (m. About 1872 from census) - Raphoe/Strabane
Anthony Ward and Isabella Ferry (m. Before 1870) - Dunfanaghy
James McElhinney and Eliza McMullen (m. 1856) - Stranorlar
Greatfull for any advice.
Thanks
M

You don’t say what denomination they all were but if they were RC, then marriages before 1.1.1864 are not in the civil registration records, so that might account for 2 of the marriages. Can’t see the later ones listed though.  Errors occasionally occurred but I have seen no reports of widespread evasion of registration of marriages (births & deaths weren’t always registered in early years though).

If any of these couples had children born in Scotland, then the children’s birth certificates will record the date and place of the parents marriages.

Thanks both
The families were all roman catholic so that explains probably two of them being missing.
I cannot find any matches on the familysearch site.
Thanks again

Hi, for the marriages of
William Sheerin and Catherine Flood (m. about 1885 from census) - Raphoe/Strabane
Daniel Devenny and Margaret Gallagher (m. About 1872 from census) - Raphoe/Strabane

both are recorded at Lifford RC church, Donegal 1885 and 1873 respectively, don't see a civil record for either marriage, cannot find a church record for either of the older marriages

Regards

Thanks joemc
That's really useful - would you mind telling me where you found them listed?  I'd like to get a copy of the church entry if possible.
Thanks again

Hi, a copy of  the records can be found on microfilm at PRONI,

R.C.  Clonleigh and Camus (Derry diocese)
 [Partly in Camus parish]
 Baptisms, 1773 -95, 1836-7 and 1853-80; marriages,
1778-81 and 1843-81.    MIC1D/61

A transcription of the records can also be viewed on line for a fee on the roots ireland site, unfortunately RC marriage records from the period do not usually contain fathers names only witnesses.

The records for the Parish date back to the late 1700's  so you may be able to get back another generation or 2 through the church records. Had a quick look for Daniel Devennys birth record (based on age in 1901 census) and found a Daniel Devenny baptised 1845, father Daniel Devenny, mothers name Bell

Thanks very much for that - I've found a few more relatives as a result.
