Jessie McDonald nee McLean
« on: Thursday 14 June 12 13:11 BST (UK) »
Hi All
I need some assistance in finding the whereabouts of the above person.

Last known address was Old Macher on the death of her husband Ronald McDonald who was killed at ferryhill railway station Sept 1856.

She at this time would be about 40 years of age as she gave her age as 33years on the 1851 census and her place of birth as Monzie Perthshire.

I found the death of their son William on The 4th April 1855 address looks like 25 cottage street Aberdeen.

She may have moved back to Perthshire.

Yours Aye

Bruce, this birth of a William is interesting. I can only find Alexander's birth in 1850, Perth. Cottage Street is probably Connon Street. Unfortunately, Jessie McDonald, born in Perthshire c 1818 throws up several hits in the post 1861 census.
There is one hit for 1861, South Side High Street, Crieff, Perthshire, born, Monzie, Perthshire, with son Alexander and a lodger.

Regards

Malky

Could Cottage Street be College Street which is in Ferryhill and adjacent to the railway?

Hi Bruce

What do you have if anything of the children of Ronald and Jessie?

Could she have remarried after Ronald's death in 1856?

Saw this IGI marriage: Jessie McLean and James Grainger m.30 Dec. 1857 in Old Machar, Aberdeen. However, in 1871 (struggling with the 1861 so far) this Jessie shows as born in Nairn. The family in Old Marchar:

James Grainger 39 ship wright b. Aberdeen
Jessie Grainger 41 b. Nairn
Robina Grainger 12
Robert Grainger 3
James Grainger 1
John Mclean 38, cousin b. Nairn

Monica :)

Added: Sorry Bruce, although similar names, not sure :-\ Found now I think this Jessie Grainger in 1861:

Margaret McKamie 48
Jessy Grainger 29, lodger b. Croy, Invernesshire
Robina Grainger 2 lodger b. Old Marchar

Address: 11 Benaccord Lane, Aberdeen/Old Marchar

Hi Malky

William was only 7 months old when he died on April 4th 1855. I will have a look at the one in Crieff
as this is the area where these families originated.

Hi Heymin

Had a look at death cert under glass as you say it is College street.

Hi Monica

Jessie was born Monzie Crieff area c1818

Yes, I saw. Nothing really showing on 1861 for her with the info we have so far  :-\ Reason I was looking at a possible remarriage which might explain why we couldn't easily see her in 1861 under McLean or McDonald.

Have you checked for deaths? There is only one entry showing for a Jessie M*cLean/M*cDonald, born 1818 +/-5yrs post 1855.

Hi All

I find this family strange.

When William died in 1855 he was buried in what looks like Spital cemetery according to the death cert that I have, but when his father died his body was taken back to Perthshire and buried in the same cemetery (Kirkhill Redgorton) as his brother James who died earlier in the year.

Any thoughts anyone.

A long way to take Ronald back to his home and family burial, but not uncommon at that time. Many people would chose to be buried back in their place of birth and with family members in those times. Often coffins would be carried by groups of 6/12/18 etc. taking turns to carry the coffin, stopping at designated points on burial paths, until they reached the burial destination.

How they got Ronald back to Perthshire though is harder to say given the distance.

Maybe different views were taken on the burials of children and they were buried where they died most often.
