D/C for William Evans.
« on: Friday 15 June 12 08:04 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help? I am trying to track down the death details for a William Evans. He died at some point between the 1871 & 1881 census,as his wife,Elizabeth,is recorded as widowed by 1881.

I have now ordered four D/Cs that I thought might be the correct one but,to be honest,I'm really non the wiser!. William was born in c1815 (his yr of birth varies from census to census),in Marylebone,Middlesex. He married Elizabeth Lovell in Hackney on 19/07/1836 (if only it had been a year later!) & from then up to his death is found, with his family, living at various addresses in Bethnal Green.

His occupation is described,at various times, as being a Copperplate printer,a labourer,a Lead Merchant,a Property Master,an Artist & a Carpenter. The D/C I thought most likely was a William Evans died 13/08/1880,aged 62,at 26,Noble St,Old Street,St Luke,Holborn,a Builders' Labourer, informant,Sarah Dearbeg,sister-in-law,address 31,Great Chart St,Hoxton. I have been unable to trace Sarah at all. Could she be a married sister of William's wife??.

In 1881 the widowed Elizabeth Evans is found living at 179,Bow Common Lane,Mile End Old Town, with her granddaughter,Adelaide Delue (sic).

I do have another D/C which records the death of William Evans 11/05/1878,aged 64,at 37,Nottingham Mews,Marylebone,Occupation Groom, informant Elizabeth Evans, widow of the deceased.   I query this because William has never been described as a groom on any previous record that I have found.

Any thoughts?

Regards

Hi

As you say his address in most censuses was Bethnal Green, have you looked at this death?

William Evans
March quarter 1875
Aged 47
Bethnal Green
1C 203

Added: That would make his DOB about 1828 so probably not right

Don't know if this will help - I have only found them in 1851/61
on both census William's occ is "Labourer"

In 1851 William's age is 37
1861 although transcribed as 44 , image shows William's age as 46

Where did you find the other occupations ??

Am trying to find him in census to see  his age

Where are they in 1871?

Hi,

Groom - I haven't looked at that particular D/C, because, as you say, the age is so far out. I have the D/C of three William Evans  (thought it was four but can now only find three) -  one died 1876 in Bow,Bromley,an instrument maker. I'm pretty sure this is not the correct William & the other two as desribed in my original post. There is another D/C I am considering ordering: William Evans born 1816 died 1879 in St George,Hanover Square but the area doesn't seem right.

Suzard - Have traced the family in 1841,1851,1861 & 1871. In 1871 (surname transcribed as Evan),the family are living at 191,Globe Rd,Bethnal Green. William is recorded as a labourer. I got the other occupations from records of his children's baptisms & marriages.

Have you tried looking to see if he left a will?   A long shot, but he might have done.

It does seem rather odd that the death isn't around the Bethnal Green area if that is where they lived for all of their lives.

Hi,

There's no will as far as I can find.

This has me really stumped, unless he is the William Evans who died  13/08/1880 in Holborn,in which case, who is the informant Sarah Dearbeg??

Have you checked for other spellings of his surname in the death registers.  There can't be many I admit but maybe Evan without the S?
Sarah Dearbeg could simply be a local nurse.  Was she present at the death or the informant?  I can't remember the difference offhand but there is one.
