Need Help deciphering 1800's era letters
« on: Wednesday 20 June 12 20:17 BST (UK) »
Hello, I have found many very old letters at the bottom of a box my grandfather gave me. I would love some help deciphering what these say. Most are in English but two are in German, if anyone can help deciphering German.

The following links are direct links to the images, if someone could tell me how to embed the links that would be awesome!

Okay, these were most likely written in Jackson County Missouri, which would make sense with the first letter. Many of the people from my family, based on my understanding, lived and were influential figures in Independence and Jackson county Missouri, so i'm guessing those first few documents are from there. Still trying to figure out who they were from/sent to.

Hi Andy :)

Embedding the images like this is fine, if you're happy with it - alternatively you can go to the "Attach a photograph or image" link below the "Message" box when you're composing a post, and do it that way.  All those images have to be below 500kb, though.

It would be really helpful if in future you could split up this kind of request into two or more separate threads - that way people on slow connections are able to download the page more easily.

In fact, as the last two documents appear to be in German, and in the old German handwriting (that I forget the name of), you might want to remove them from this thread, and attach them to a new one with a subject line stating that you need decipherment and translation from the German - that will attract the people who know how to read this (and we do have a few on Rootschat).

Cheers
Prue

okay, sorry about that. I removed those last two and will put up a different one for them. I tried to attach the photos before but they were to big, so I figured this was the only way to put them up.
