Oban 1900
« on: Saturday 23 June 12 11:46 BST (UK) »
This is my first posting in the Argyllshire section! Just looking for information about the Oban Hydropathic, which I believe was a sanatorium which was never completed. I have someone saying she recalls an ancestor going there around 1900... the children were packed up for a picnic to the grounds of Hydropathic while another child received treatment. Perhaps this is not quite right and the child received treatment at home while the other two were packed off. Any background information would be wonderful. If anyone knows of any old Oban Directories for around that time the name to look for is Brock. Here's hoping...
Edwards, Grieve, Talbert in Angus and Kincardineshire; Allan, Dundas, Hacket, Milne, Reid in Aberdeen and Orkney; Brock in Thurso and Aberdeen; Rennie in Aberdeenshire to name but a few...

Hi ED :)

From articles available online it looks like the Oban Hydropathic never operated, as it went bust before it was finished.  Sounds like it was planned to be a very posh establishment.

There was apparently a County Sanatorium on Benvoulin Hill in Oban around the turn of the century, but I can't find out much about it online - someone may know more about it.  Maybe that is where your friend's ancestor went?

That's interesting... I wonder if the child went there? I did find something on the net which said it specialised in "phsthis" which, from my understanding is TB. Many members of this family died from the disease, owing to almost all being stonecutters. The father is missing from the family in the 1911 Census (sorry... I meant to say it was around 1910 they were in Oban not 1900) although he does surface later. I am wondering if perhaps it was the father (he was a stonecutter too) who was receiving treatment and not a child. Purely a guess!
