Liz, have you have any other replies on this one? I 'googled' Mary Morris and Presteigne and came up with the Powys digital history project and the story of Mary morris is on there
Bit grisly!

There is a book on Mary Morgan and her tragic tale called The Morning of her Day by Jennifer Green. S he is buried in Presteigne Churchyard and her tombstone is there and has flowers regularly laid on it.

Another young girl was similarly sentenced some time after Mary but the locals stormed the gaol and got her out.

Hi

What a terribly sad story. I often think of the times of my ancestors as warm and romantic. This really puts it into perspective.

It's worth reading to the end of that story.  I read somewhere that it was common for the story of those who'd been hanged to be written as if the person had confessed and repented, as a kind of moral tale for the general population, even if they had not done this.
