This is my 3rd attempt - hopefully 3rd time lucky!

Sorry I just sent this but the photograph did not seem to
attach so here is my message and (hopefully) photo, again..

Greetings,

I would love to have a date for the attached photograph as there
is disagreement between various family members as to whether
it is our great grandmother Charlotte who was born in 1866, or her
daughter Mary born in 1887.

There are no markings as the photo was sent to me as a photocopy and
this is all I have.

Any help would be most gratefully received.

  I'm going to guess about 1897-1899-ish -  There's a photo in my book showing a dress with similar shoulder 'flaps' saying "tea gown  1899".  It is an Australian book.  Is the photo taken in Aus or elsewhere?

Thanks for your suggestion Wiggy.  The photograph would have been taken in the East End of London, but I would think that fashions would not have differed too much between here and the UK.  I will wait a while to see if I get any more imput before I decide who the lady is.  So far, one vote (yours) for my great grandmother as my grandmother would only have been about 12 in 1899 and this lady was older than that.

I don't think it is going to be someone born in 1887   ;)  Nice looking woman wasn't she!

Hi Diana :)

I would agree with the general date range given by Wiggy - certainly around that time frame.  It would really help to see the whole thing though; do you have the photograph and could you scan again?  here is a guide to what we look for when dating: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,517366.0.html

It's very nice of you to work on Diana's photo - we do have guidelines about this kind of thing though, and we ask that people do not attempt restorations or colourisations unless specifically requested.  Please see here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,528438.0.html  This is mainly to avoid having restorers do work that is not required, and potentially wasting their time (it has happened in the past, which is why we introduced the guidelines).
