KING Michael and sister Maryann born Roundstone, Co Galway
« on: Monday 25 June 12 02:38 BST (UK) »
I am the g. grand daughter of Michael King, son of James and Mary King, Roundstone Galway. He was born 1840 abt. and his sister MaryAnn was born abt 1841. Michael married Maria Ann McNeill from Rahoon, Galway and they moved to Australia in 1862 where he became a mounted policeman. Does this sound like your family from Roundstone area? Although his birth says Roundstone, they were farmers so the correct place could have been Clifden or anywhere in between! I would love to find out what happened to his parents, James and Mary (farmers) and where they lived. We have a huge interest in this King family history, dear to me on my dad's side of our family. We will be returning to Ireland again this year and I would love to have more information this time, any help appreciated. Anne

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

As you have probably already seen, there are quite a few Kings in that area. Here is the Griffiths Valuation for Moyrus parish.

Civil registration did not begin until 1864. If your family were Catholic, your dates are too early for Parish records.

Did Mary Ann also emigrate or did she marry in Ireland?

There are some Galway resources and information in this forum here

best wishes
heywood

Yes they were a Catholic farming family, Michael and his wife Maria (McNeill) sailed to Australia with their baby daughter Eliza in 1862 and Michael then sponsored his sister Mary Ann out later. I would think there would have been a larger family left in Ireland, unusual to have had only 2 children, unless affected by the famine. I can find no record of James and Mary afterward, although I imagine they stayed in Roundstone area. Anne

We have been contacted about a John King before, and I think he may be a part of the family who went to Lancashire to work? I know my ancestor Michael King and his wife Maria went to Lancashire to work and then returned possibly only a year later with their baby to sail to Australia from Ireland. Apparently a lot of Irish did this , for work. I have found a John King living next door to them in Lancashire and he was from Roundston area, Co Galway too, I thought he may have been an uncle? He staying in England and married, with children there. I can find no record of any other than our Michael King of our family going there though. So I am assuming his parents and siblings were still in Ireland. All I know is that Michael had a sister Mary ann who did emigrate after her brother, to Australia. Anne

Hi, if you happen to come across anything to do with James and Mary King, who registered their childrens' births as Roundstone, we would be delighted to know. The children were Michael and Mary Ann plus others yet to be found.

I forgot to add, James and Mary King would have been born around 1820ish and the children were born 1848 and either side of that date, Anne
