Tralee baptisms
« on: Tuesday 26 June 12 12:11 BST (UK) »
have been looking at the Kerry (tralee) baptism records on irishgenealogy.ie and managed to find three relevant ones....my question is, are the sponsors generally of the same generation as the parents of the child being baptised? are there any 'rules' about this?  Hard enough making headway without then recycling the same few names LOL

no rules about godparent, other that they need to have been confirmed. So could be relatives, family friends, neighbours, work colleagues etc

There was an old tradition that grandparents would sponsor some of the first born but I don't know was it wide spread. In a few of my families this was the case the first child was sponsored by their own grandparents. Usually after that brother/sisters of the parents or cousins and neighbours.

thanks for that......that suggestion would fit in nicely with the names that I have and also that they seem to recycle names generation  to generation.... just have to try and work out where they fit into picture lol
