Terace Court, Milton next Gravesend
« on: Tuesday 03 July 12 20:11 BST (UK) »
Can anybody tell me where Terrace Court was/is?  Presumeably somewhere near The Terrace.  Also, does anybody know where Library Cottage was/is?
When my Grandfather was bapised the address was 2 Terrace Court, and on a siblings baptism the address was Library Cottage.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Both Terrace Court and Library Place came under Milton Gravesend.

Terrace Court was off The Terrace. Library Cottage was between Bentley St and Pilots Place.  The same area, all housing round these places was very much lived in by people associated with working on the water !!

Hope this helps.

Best wishes..... Iris :)

Thank you so much for your help.   We'll have to  visit and wander round the area to get a feel of the place.  As a matter of interest, my Great Grandfather was a shoemaker but I don't know who he worked for.

Thanks again.

Sorry I didn't put the dates.   The first child was baptised in 1884 and the last 1896.  They were all baptised at Holy Trinity Church.  However two children were buried in 1894 at St, Georges and sometime between February and November 1894 they moved to Augustine Street.

Many thanks

If you haven't already done so, you can use Medway City Ark to look for the baptisms and the burial records :)

Best wishes.....Iris :)

Hi Iris,   Yes it is James Bassett.  I have got the baptisms and burials from City Ark (what a brilliant site).  I just wanted to see where they lived.  I see some old houses down Pilots Place are still there.  I assume that Library Cottage was just along from there towards Bentley Street.

Thanks again,

Kay

Hi I've just found your post. Beware of assuming that a person was buried at a church just because there is a burial entry for them in the church records. I tended to believe these too but I have found that a lot of my ancestors were actually buried at the Gravesend Cemetary, not at various churches although it would be that the funeral service was held at the church before hand.

I have found a James (Wickens ?) Barrett buried in the cemetary 9 Feb 1894, he was 9 years old at the time and he had lived in Bentley Street.
He was removed from Milton to the cemetary and was buried in a Common Grave 3209 in consecrated ground.

There is also a Lily May Bassett buried on 26 Nov the same year aged 21 months with an address of Augustine Rod, (the road where I lived and grew up btw. ).
She was also removed from Milton and was buried in consecrated ground in a Common Grave no. 3361.

Hope this is of use to you.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply.  These are the two children I referred to and I must admit I assumed they were buried at St. Georges.  Thanks to you I can now amend my records.

Thanks once again for your help.
