Alexander Pentland, Spirit Merchant, Portadown
« on: Wednesday 04 July 12 08:50 BST (UK) »
Evelyne Pentland wife of the Portadown publican, Alexander died in 1940. Can anyone tell me his wife's surname and whether he was the son of Richard and Sarah Pentland? I have looked for a marriage but none found in a sensible period.  Alexander appears to have married in 1919 but there is no obvious matching entry for his bride.

The marriage certificate will list father's name and occupation for both bride and groom which should make it possible to find both family in census records.

There are several Ev* Malcolmsons in 1901/1911 census but this is only Alexander Pentland in Armagh in 1901-

In 1911 same family is now listed as Methodist rather than Church of Ireland-

PRONI Will Extracts (www.proni.gov.uk)- "Pentland Evelyne of 46 Bridge Street Portadown county Armagh died 6 July 1940 Administration Belfast 26 August to Alexander Pentland spirit merchant the husband. Effects £421 15s.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello I am wondering why you are researching Alexander and Evelyn Pentland? Are you a relative or do you have any information on their siblings or parents.

I am Evelyn Pentland Acworth--the granddaughter.

Yes Harold's wife is still alive. I have 8 cousins on the Pentland side and am one of three.
Weird to see the grave details printed that I have red so often

This is a 2 part answer.  I  trace Pentlands because I have Jones and McDowells in my tree and I expect to link more closely to Pentlands someday.   One of these went to Amsterdam, NY and therefore became even more of interest.  Pentland and Pendleton are very old names in the area and I expect more ties than I have found so far.  I took the pictures and made the posting hoping to help others so the could later help me.

Secondly, this is an old post.  I hear that laws have changed in either Ireland or NI and postings of church inscriptions are now banned,  They are located on private property and therefore considered private information.  So many sites list grave inscriptions and they do not seem to have deleted them.  I don't know what is going on, but I suppose if the listing bothers you, you an apply to have it deleted.  This flies in the face of very old American gravestones which inform the viewer that they will soon be lying in the ground and therefore should not sin.  These appear to be public warnings to me and are part of my culture.  I feel strongly that gravestones are made as a remembrance and to remind all people of those who came before and that they  can be a powerful public statement.  They often speak of the love of those surviving or the pain of losing children.  The carving style reflects the cultural times and makes me more aware of changes.  I think it is important to all of us to better understand our ancestors and social history .    Apparently others disagree,   Have it deleted if you wish.
