Russia: HYMAN MENDLE
« on: Friday 06 July 12 22:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Have a Hyman Mendle b. 1879 Russia.  Married in 1913. Have details from this date upwards.
Cannot find him on Incoming Passenger Lists on Anc.  Cannot find him on any census.
His father was a Jacob Mendle deceased from Hymans' marriage certificate.
Believe he came from Vilnius(Vilna) Lithuania.
Any suggestions, especially Lithuanian Records.

Thanks for even any tiny little bit of info.

Ps. Yes the MC has a differant spelling.  Think it was how Register heard it.  Used the name Mendle.

Think that was one I discounted, but re-check my notes and let you on either of the census.

Thank you

Hi,
The 1911 is not my Hyman as he is a foundry worker and mine was always a baker.
The 1901 census Manchester could be him as the d.o.b. would coincide, but no mention of occupation.
Sometime after marriage he went to live in Cheetham Hill, Manchester.
Would imagine as being a boarder in 1901 that he could have come to the UK a year or two before.  No sign of him in the Incoming Passenger Lists 1878-1960.  So need to find when he came to the UK.  Have to check out various eastern/northern europe shipping lists somewhere.

That you for your kind intervention.

Hi Steve,

did you check the name on jewishgen or other pages?

I don't know, when Jews started to have fixed surnames in Russia. (Until Napoleon has fixed the name, my ancestors from the Kahn/Cohen-family used five different surnames or the fathers name.)

With fathers name, he might be as Heimann Jokūbas (= Jacob, lith.) or as Geimann Jakow on the shiplist. - Heimann might be written Geimann, because of the russian spelling ...

Mendle, Mendel could be written as  Menachem or  Immanuel ...

Good luck

Hi Rudolf,
Thank you for that info.  Thats given me another avenue to research now.  Did'nt know there could be a name change or spelling.
As you seem to to be very knowledgeable on the subject of name changes and spellings may I ask you what these names might be;  Leah,   David,  and surname Goldstein.  All from what was Russia.
Thanks
