Manchester General Cemetery Pauper Graves Information Needed
« on: Friday 06 July 12 23:54 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am hoping that some RootsChatters would be able to help us with some information about the Pauper Sections in the Manchester General Cemetery.

As the MGCTP continues with it's project, we are always searching for any information that can help us with the mapping and recording of the Cemetery.

If anyone who believes they have an Ancestor in the General Cemetery Public/Pauper Sections of the Cemetery can provide the name of their Ancestor and Religion it would be a great help to us.

What we do know is that shown on the common map of the Cemetery the blacked out section at the back of the Cemetery is believed to be the Church Section Public/Pauper Section.

The Manchester Burial online search site states only the Non Conformist burials Register upto 1886, after this year CofE is mentioned too  But an odd few names we believe to be Church, so we are hoping that with the aid of information gained from family researchers it maybe able to help us out, in understanding a little more about the Cemetery.

If your Ancestors lived in the area and you may believe they are buried in the Cemetery that were of Church of England and haven't been able to trace or find the Gravestones in the Cemetery those names also, may possibly be of help to us.

Please post or PM names etc.,

Many Thanks Cancan :)

My ancestors were possibly buried in the paupers section as they both died in the workhouse. Emma Eckersley died 1st September 1888 in the Union workhouse Withington, her death was registered by the matron of the workhouse although her husband William was alive. George Mullis died 25th December 1888 in the Salford Union Infirmary Pendleton. Hope this is useful to you as I can't find a burial anywhere for either of these two.

Cancan,
will the local workhouse have a burial register and creed register, maybe this would be worth looking through, that is if you have any time between all your hard work ,clearing ,mapping and transcribing,
if I lived in Manchester I would sit in the archives doing the look up,happily ,for you and your hard working friends,

I've got Elizabeth Lawton, who died 7th April 1860 in the New Bridge St workhouse age 86, and was buried at MGC in a public grave on 10th April.  Her immediate family were Church of England, so there is a good chance she was as well.

There is no clue in the burial register as to who paid for her burial (i.e. the workhouse guardians or her own family) so I don't know if she would have gone into a section reserved for workhouse burials (which I understand was originally an unconsecrated plot, but with C of E inmates getting the C of E service read at their burial), or into a public grave in the consecrated section.

Hope this helps! All that digging and she's the only ancestor I know to be in MGC so far!  ;D

Hi All

I have a possible relative buried in what seems to be a paupers grave in Manchester General Cemetery.
I am looking for more info on this grave if possible. It is in the consecrated section of the cemetery, grave 1150 he is the tenth and last person in the grave. All were buried between 7 th April 1892 and 18 th May 1892.

His name was Thomas Hill died 18th May 1892 age 66, address 14 Carruthers St Ancoats.

Hi Emma,

This grave is in the public CofE section of the General Cemetery.  There is no stone that we know of at present.  I can pinpoint where it should be, if you would like this, just send your email via a PM and I'll send it to you.  There is no other records available except the burial register to give any other details other than what you have.  There is no plot register for this grave plot. :)

Hi organicgardener,

I saw from your other posting that it is looking like they maybe possibly in a Salford Cemetery from the information that other Rootschatters were able to give you, but will keep names on file just incase :)

Hi Barbara,

We'll keep looking!!!!   ;)

Hi  Babling Brook,

PM all you have, you never know we maybe able to help, we have a few indexes now!  :)

Hi Radcliff,

Thanks,  Great idea, know just where to start!! :)

Hi Radcliff,

Just heard the weather is supposed to be OK for Sunday,  hoping the ground is OK too!!!   Have missed going and getting things done.

Sorry to hear about the wheelbarrow!!!  Stick up a notice in the local pub!!! 'Stolen Wheelbarrow - used - but wanted!! please return!!!'

Maybe someone may have a guilty conscience! :-\

I've lost a spade and loppers at our Cem!!  Never been there when we've been back even after being gone only 10mins.

Keep up the brilliant work!!!
