I have recently learned from researching my family tree that my 4 x gt grandfather, John Dicker, was a Police Sargent in Ruthin Goal in both 1861 and 1871 census records.

Family tales speak of a stained glass window or writing on an archway mentioning his name, for the moment I will leave it to tales, but hope one day to visit the goal to find out myself.

If anyone knows if this may be true would be very grateful for any information.

I hope events at the archives are a great success,...

Kind regards
PP

The 1871 census shows that John Dicken was a police sergeant, living in Clwyd Street, but he was not employed at the Gaol, - which was by this time HM Prison, Ruthin, - as there were not police officers assigned there.

According to the Denbighshire Constabulary records he joined the Denbighshie police on 9 June 1871 and was stationed in Llanfair Talhaearn, Wrexham, Gwersyllt Holt and Stansty, before resigning from the force in 1887.

I have no information as to a stained glass window or archway, there is certainly nothing like that at the Gaol.

kind regards,

Jane Brunning, Prif Archifydd/Senior Archivist, Denbighshire Archives

Thank you Jane for your prompt reply.

I wasn't aware of the date he joined the Constabulary and are very grateful for the information.

It was very kind of you to take the time to look. I really hope to visit the archives one day.

Kind regards
Sarah
