no parents listed on the Scottish Certificate.

If he didn’t know who his parents were, it certainly will be a challenge to find them. Did he die in Scotland? (Scottish death certs also normally contain both parents names. Perhaps by the time of his death his parents were known).

Hi there, in your original post you said that Edward John:

"Married between 1864-66 in Greenock, Scotland to an Eliza Gattins/Gettins or McGillican."

...then in a further post you said that:

"Edward was married in Greenock, Scotland and no parents listed on the Scottish Certificate."

If you have seen the certificate as the further post infers, is there a deciphering problem over the wife's name?

I'm lost...  :(

Sorry Marilyn1511, I can't find anything for the information you have provided so far, perhaps others can...

Eliza's maiden name was either Gattins or Gettins - it is very unclear.  I dont see the name  McGillican on the certificate.  I have taken over this research from my mum so not sure where she got the McGillican from.

Not all church records pre-1850 survive and of those that still exist not all available online. So, sticking to the facts-

Edward Devlin married 9 Aug.1864 Greenock to Eliza Gettins.

The parents of the Edward Devlin who married Eliza Gettins in Greenock in 1864 were Timothy Devlin and Mary Thomson. That Edward was born in 1836 in the townland of Cornadrung, Columbkille parish in County Longford. (gaffy)

Mary Jane Devlin born 5 June 1865 Greenock- parents Edward Devlin & Eliza Gattens

John Devlin born 25 May 1868 Greenock- parents Edward Devlin & Eliza Gattens

Edward Devlin born 21 Nov.1870 Milton, Glasgow- parents Edward Devlin & Eliza Gattens
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQJG-1XM
"Edward (the son) died in Melbourne, Australia 22/3/1912." Possibly this is same Edward?

Hugh Devlin born 8 Aug.1873 Glasgow- parents Edward Devlin & Eliza Gattens

I'll try and get a borth certificate for Edward.

If you mean Edward born 1870 Scotland- you can view it on Scotland's People website after purchasing credits.

If you mean his father Edward- there will be no birth certificate (registration started in 1864).
