'Hopey' Wells
« on: Wednesday 11 July 12 15:56 BST (UK) »
William Wells, 1833.  Family story has it that William's daughter, Elizabeth, took him to London with her and her new husband, William Batten.  He, William, was reputed to be from Cornwall where he had a quite elevated position in the Romany community under the name of 'Hopey'.
As with a lot of family stories, I can find no info. to support this.  My info. has William being one of the Wells of Windy Hall, Isleham. ( I'll ask for help with that one another time).
Please let me know if you can help.

Hi,

I've checked and Wells is a known gypsy surname in the right time frame, in orset and somerset areas.  Have you managed to find him on the census from 1841 onwards?

Thank you all for info.

Hi Kazi
Yes I have 1841census  for Edward/Hannah and son William. In fact I have 2, as all the Wells at Windy Hall, Isleham, used such similar names.
Then I skip to 1891 census at Kensington with William, wife Sarah and my grandmother, Isadore Batten. She was actually Elizabeth Isadore Batten.
I have 1901 with, I think, the same William and Sarah and granchildren.

Hi...  I can be extremely slow at times!

Where does Cornwall come into it??
Cambridge is a good county to find Traveller in though...

Do you have them in all the census or just the ones you mentioned??

Pondering this one.

William Battens parents Richard??? AKA Wm Batthen & wife Emma came to London around 1870/71 when William Jnr would have been 10 - so story may be amiss

but I often find the story has a kind of truth some way...

Have you got and address for 1901?
