George Philpott married Mary Mepham at Sheldwich on 6 November 1811. The witnesses were Mary Mepham and Austen Philpott. As far as I can find they had six children in Sheldwich before the remainder of their children were baptised in Chilham. These were John 1811, Mary Ann 1813, George 1816, Benjamin 1820, Sarah 1822 and Caroline 1824. All were said to be of Sheldwich apart from Mary Ann when is was noted “Belonging to Chilham.”
I have set out under possibles for the parents of George Philpott and Mary Mepham.
There is a baptism record for a George Philpott at Chilham, date 14 September 1788 with parents John and Jane. Preceding this there is a marriage also in Chilham between John Philpott and Jane Philpott dated 22 April 1775. A point of interest this couple had a son baptised Augustine in 1781. He may well be the witness at George’s marriage as Augustine is often shortened to Austen. There was another son Benjamin baptised in Chilham to the same couple.
There is a baptism record for a Sarah Mepham in St Margaret, Canterbury dated 6 October 1793, with parents Thomas and Martha. Preceding this there is a marriage recorded in Molash between Thomas Mepham and Martha Heneker dated 2 December 1786.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Tony
