Actual date of 1881 Census?

Does anyone know when the 1881 census was held - what month and day?  Ive been confused as I have 3 families in the same house and thought it to be a mistranscription. However, Ive just discovered a family member whose wife has both the other surnames (her mother & father) and had a child in 1881. Just wondered if they had all the rellies round on the day of the census to wet the baby's head!?
