Kemp/Kempt Family
« on: Monday 23 July 12 04:11 BST (UK) »
Hi there. Was wondering if anyone can help me.

Theodore George Kemp/Kempt (my gr gr gr grandfather) was born about 1833 in Devon, England.
Catherine Hurley (my gr gr gr grandmother) was born about 1838 in England.

Both sailed to Australia in 1858 on the ship Stebonheath.

They married in Sydney 16 July 1858. They had a daughter Amy Ann born July 1859 in Sydney.
Only other info I have is Theodore was jailed for two years in Darlinghurst Gaol in 1860.

I can't find any info after these dates on either Theodore or Catherine on census's, electoral roles, death indexes etc or even if they had any more children after Amy.  ???

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks, Gaye

There is every possibility that Theodore did not come back to Catherine after his Gaol term.

There are several marriages of a Catherine Hurley. She could have remarried if Theo was proved absent for seven years. There is one in 1867.

There is also a strange marriage of an AMY Kemp to a Henry Vieser in Gulgong 1873, yeas she would have been very young. They dont have ANY children and neither of them seem to have died in NSW Either ???

Pretty enigmatic lot yours ???

There is a Monumental Inscription at FOOTSCRAY CEMETERY for AMY ANN McKINNON

McKINNON In Loving Memory of AMY ANN McKINNON died 3rd June 1942 aged 81.  Also JOHN  McKINNON died 20th July 1939 aged 84. WILLIAM EDWARD , loved son of the above died 23rd June 1937 aged 42 Years.

The son WILLIAM is buried at the Cemetery .
He was a labourer of Footscaray

There are no others with him.

I have not located AMY and JOHN interred at the Cemetery, but will look further.

I am seeing District Urana  ???

Theodore arrived as an ordinary seaman on the Stebonheath and gave his age as 29 - so born c1829.  FamilySearch has this death:

Theodors George KEMPE
Gender:    Male
Burial Date:    22 Aug 1872
Burial Place:    Calcutta, Bengal, India
Death Date:    21 Aug 1872
Death Place:
Age: 44

Maybe he jumped on another ship and ran away to India.

You could be right Debra...I took the info from Ancestry marriage index  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) and we all know how many errors are on their databases.  I have problems with the NSW bdm's at times...stalls and won't let me search.

Good result with GT's death.  Wonder what happened to Catherine?
