Baldock & Hitchen
« on: Monday 23 July 12 06:13 BST (UK) »
Hi, Hoping someone can assist with what is probably a very simple query. One of my ancestor's birth is recorded a being at "Baldock & Hitchen".  (James Gripper, 7 November 1755). I know these are two separate towns and are about 7 miles apart, so I'm guessing that, in 1755 at least, they were a combined parish perhaps?

I'll be grateful for any advice.

Cheers,

Trevor

Hi

If you search HALS Online Names
http://www.hertsdirect.org/services/leisculture/heritage1/hals/indexes/
for Gripper (and date to 1899) you get an interesting little cluster of results.
The Gripper name implies multiple land ownership (so could be as written "Baldock AND Hitchin" ? ) including a "Grippers Yard".

Folks, I think I have solved my own mystery.

When you search on the non-conformist records on the National Archives site, it warns you that events may be recorded at more than one location.

I have some ancestors who had the same event ( e.g. a birth) recorded for the same person in 5 separate records, some of which show as "Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire"and others just as Nottinghamshire.

Looks like my Baldock & Hitchen record is one that is recorded in both places - mystery solved, I think.
