Hello Newbe...
No luck sorry.
Dropped in to my local library. Seems the ATL Biographies Index has many entries in common with the NZ Card Index - but not every entry. Needless to say the obituary for Hugh MacKEY
isn't one of the common entries.
All that is listed on the ATL fiche for Hugh MacKEY are the dates of correspondence between the ATL and researchers asking questions about Hugh. The little explanatory booklet says that you can contact the ATL and they will let you see their replies but not the original questions. Not sure what that's about. Suspect some privacy angle.
If you decide to contact the ATL you need to give them the following references...
-----
Hugh MacKEY 1824 - 1897
TL 3/1/2 - 20 Feb, 4 Mar 1980
Sarah NEWDICK
TL 3/1/2 - 15 Mar, 26 Mar 1980
TL 3/1/2 - 21 Apr, 9 May 1978
-----
The above mentioned
"20 Feb, 4 Mar 1980" means original enquiry received by the ATL on 20 Feb 1980. Reply sent by the ATL on 4 March 1980
TL 3/1/2 means NZ Biographies, Clippings and Correspondence held at the ATL
TL 3/1/3 are local history items held by the ATL
TL 3/1/4 are passenger lists held at the ATL
I've had nothing to do with this side of the ATL so can't advise. Possibly others can.
But I've had advice from the ATL in other areas and they are really helpful.

The ATL fiche also mentions a "Hugh MacKEY/Sarah NEWDICK" query from 1980 on page 691 of the NZ Genealogist. I have a copy of the query which I can email to you if you want, although you seem to know everything mentioned in the query. Just pm me your email.
The researcher seems to have the 1897 death certificate for Hugh which says born in Co.Donegal (at least that's how I read it). She can be googled, although post-2002 references seem sparse.
It's possible that she is the one writing to the ATL in 1980.

The ATL fiche also had an entry for a Hugh
MACKY which reads....
Hugh MACKY
Boat builder at Auckland
Allegedly arrived in NZ c.1820
Present at wedding of daughter Sarah to Richard NEWDICK - Auckland 20 March 1843Seems like bad guesswork to me (and I ought to know :-)
Regards
