Help reading part of a will (2)
« on: Monday 23 July 12 18:09 BST (UK) »
AGain I am not sure of a few words

Starting from the left end of the top line

Item I give unto my brother William Scott, to my sister Anne Miller, and to my sister Anne Grobby the sum of five shillings a ??

2 questions

Is it Anne Miller (could it be Jane?), and if yes, then why 2 sisters called Anne?

I guess one might be a sister in law.

Tks for any help

I don't see "Jane" I think they're both Anne.

Could they have been sisters who use Anne as their first names after marriage? For example, one could be Anne "Marie", the other "Margaret" Anne but because their husband's family already had an Margaret she called herself Anne? In the will, the differentiation would be made by their different surnames? Only a guess!!!

I think the second sister's name is Alice.

I didn't think the two names looked identical, even though the second one is partly hidden by a blot and could be interpreted as Anne.

Firstly I wondered what the dot above the name was and thought it was maybe from an "i" but wasn't sure of the rest of the letters.  My first thought was "Aline" but that didn't seem right (perhaps Arline?)  The second letter certainly looked like a tall letter, and not part of the blot to me.

Then I looked at the last word on the line and realised that it might say "apeece" (apiece).  The last two letters of "apeece" are identical to the last two letters in the name, and the name "Alice" suddenly emerged.

Hope this is right!

Edit - Alexander has confirmed the last word "a peece" so I'm hoping "Alice" is correct too.
