Spread Eagle Tavern - Deansgate
« on: Wednesday 25 July 12 10:15 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on the Spread Eagle tavern on Deansgate around 1830?

My 4x G Grandfather was apparently the proprietor known as the "crusty old major" - I have records of him being a "Captain Wild" of the 22nd regiment, but apparently retired a major.

Many thanks in advance.

Marcus

Hi Marcus,

Cannot locate a Spread Eagle on the Deansgate road in that time period - do you think it might have been the Spread Eagle on Hanging Ditch, which would have been in the Deansgate sub-registration district?

If so, google "Spread Eagle" AND "Hanging Ditch" and you'll find loads of references, some with photographs. It was a busy place with lots of business people carrying out their dealings there. There were several other Spread Eagles in Manchester/Salford, but this is the one nearest to Deansgate.

Hope that helps
