Regiments Movement
« on: Wednesday 25 July 12 12:56 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Without boring anyone with the details i am trying to find an ancestor Robert Franklin who was born in St Mary's Northgate, Canterbury, Kent between 1818 - 1820.

As i cant find any record of his birth i am now trying to locate his father Thomas (given to me by my ancestors marriage cert).

I have been informed that St Mary's Northgate was the name of the barracks and i would like to know if anyone knows of a way i can find out what regiments would've been stationed in that barracks between the years of 1818 - 1820, this way i can try and place a Thomas in Kent at that time.   Before anyone says it i realise that Thomas may not have been in the army at all, this is just another avenue i am exploring!

I understand that it may be impossible but i though someone might know a way of finding out!

Thank you in advance!  :P

Try www.canterburykfhs.co.uk/st_mary_northgate.htm

This is the Kent family history society and the records of births marriages deaths and banns cover the period you are looking for, the Soldiers families from the barracks used the church until the garrison church was built in 1850, so it is a safe bet that some soldiers families were married, christened or buried from the church, so I assume that the church records would indicated what regiment was there, I suspect a cavalry regiment at that time 1818-20, perhaps they can identify for you.

excellent, thank you for your help.

on a side issue, if there was a cavalry regiment and i found a thomas it would be very good because Robert later joined the 1st royal dragoons around 1840!

Thank you t mo, i actually have copies of the discharge papers you have listed there and traced his movements since 1841 until his death in Gateshead in 1878.

The only thing i cant find is a record of his birth.  There is nothing in the parish records for St Mary's Northgate.  Yet it clearly states on his discharge papers that he was born there.  I have since been told that perhaps his father Thomas was in the army and didnt have him baptised in St Mary's Northgate.

On Roberts marriage cert his father Thomas is listed as being a carpenter.

Thanks for all your help its much appreciated.

Cheers

Peter
