Not sure if it applies in this case, but prisoners sentenced to transportation were often imprisoned on the 'hulks' (old ships anchored just offshore for use as prisons) until there was a shipload for the journey to Australia

An Essex newspaper* of 14 Jul 1832 records his trial in the July Essex Crown Court summer sessions and sentence to 14 years transportation (his crime was killing a mare not a man).  On 18 Aug 1832 it records him being moved from the Essex Convict Gaol to the Leviathan at Portsmouth on Sat 11 Aug 1832   As has been posted, the convict hulk record says he went to the penitentiary on 5 Nov 1832.  He doesn't appear on the various convicts to Australia lists but I can't find any record of the change from transportation to penitentiary.  A little more info but not too helpful I'm afraid.  MaxD

The NA at Kew have the records on convicts sent to the hulks, it will show when they arrived together with the when & where they went.

You would need to troll through the catalogue and then look at the film in person. Series is HO 8

HO 9 may help as well

Not every prisoner sent to a hulk, which were effectively a holding place pending the next boat down under, was actually transported. My wife has a prisoner in her family who got 7 years and spent 5.5 years on a hulk before being pardoned. She is adamant he was framed :)
