Isabella McAULEY Geelong/Ballarat

I am trying to find out about this lady. The information I have is from a birth registration of a child Catherine at the Lying in Hospital at Ballarat on 10 August 1883. The document I have suggests her maiden name was Aitken and she was 26 years of age at the time of the birth. She was born in Geelong. I hope someone can give me a lead on her. Thankyou in anticipation.

The only birth of a Catherine McAuley I can see for 1883 is the following.....

Catherine MCAULEY born in 1883 at Ballarat to Isabella McAuley and unknown father.
Ref = 13942


However, there is also the following death....

Catherine MCAULEY died aged 4 months in 1878 in Ballarat.
Parents given as  Ronald McAuley and Isabella AITKEN
Ref = 10433


There's a marriage for Ronald McAuley and Isabella Aitken in 1877.
Ref =4497

Isabella's second Catherine was adopted by the Howe Family in Adelaide and was my grandmother. I am keen to explore her origins further and your information has been very helpful. I will chase the relevant references you have provided.  Thanks Dee and Leonie

Correction for you, Blinder......the marriage of Isabella and Ronald can be found in the index under by searching for AITKEN. Ronald's surname is given as MACAULEY.

To reverse the search you need to search for MACAULAY!   
His birthplace is given as Scotland. No birthplace given for Isabella.

I did notice that a Catherine MCAULEY born 1883 was on the
Victoria, Australia, Index to the Children's Registers of State Wards, 1850 -1893
The names  HOWE and HEFFERNAN are shown as a crossreference.
A copy of the record is available at the Public Records Office in North Melbourne.

I did look before for a birth for Isabella as a McAULEY initially and unfortunately there is nothing for an IsabellaAITKEN either at Geelong either however I did notice these AITKEN births at Geelong...and there are gaps between the registrations a little more than the usual two years.  Just a possibility....   I'm certainly not advocating you purchase lots of certs however the 1860 birth would list all previous issue to the marriage and if it is the correct family, it would list Isabella.

Do you have Isabella's 1877 marriage certificate?  The indexes don't always details the places of birth.

 :)As a result of all the help given, I have the information I need to kick on. Cando, the birth record of Janet, showed she was one of eleven including my Isabella, so we hit the jackpot there. The record suggests that the mother Jane Sharp was deceased. The database of the Geelong area shows a Peter Aitken in financial strife in the early 1860's. I have plenty to pursue there.
I also have the marriage certificate for the Ronald Macauley and Isabella Aitken  in Ballarat in 1877. I can now find details of my grandmother's adoption.

I can now find details of my grandmother's adoption.

This would have been an arrangement as legalised adoption was not introduced to Australia until the 1920's...can't recall all the dates and details at the moment.
