John Pedleys at Grinton
« on: Sunday 29 July 12 09:54 BST (UK) »
I am trying to identify correctly the many John Pedleys (or Pedeltys etc) who married at Grinton.  They are mostly cousins or related in some way with similar occupations (lead miners or carriers) which is not helpful!  The ones I am concentrating on at the moment were born Q3 1843, Q1 1844 and Q2 1844 in the Reeth registration district.

I believe they married as follows: Mary Wilson (Q2 1868 Reeth); Dorothy Place (Q3 1869 Reeth); Hannah Peacock (Q1 1870 Reeth), but I cannot be sure to which family they belong.  I should be really grateful if someone could look up the marriage register and let me know the groom's father's name and occupation in each case (and any other details which might be there, such as witnesses and bride's father).

Can I also take the opportunity to ask about an earlier marriage.  A  John Pedley married Catharine Dolphin on 18 Oct 1825.  I would like this John to be the son of John Pedley and Isabella Metcalfe, but I knowJohn the son died in 1831 and FreeReg shows Catharine Pedley as being buried in 1833 as wife of John Pedley, so I suspect it is not him.  Are there any details in the marriage register which might be helpful in identifying the correct John please?

Very many thanks. :)

There will be dozens of churches to search, and it may turn out to be Register office marriages anyway. Without knowing which church it's not a realistic ask.

The earlier marriage you need to ID the church too.

If Grinton is the church you are particularly interested in then you can almost certainly get the church register on film to search at your nearest LDS family history centre.  They can be a mine of information with odd snippets added by the vicar and you also get burials which often makes it clear that you are following a defunct line.

Thank you both for such prompt replies.

Yes, the church will be St Andrew's Grinton, so I will follow up the suggestion to look the marriages up by visiting an LDS family history centre.
