help with finding Delport and Carlson (Karlson) family information

Hello,

I have started doing research on behalf of my partner whose surname is Delport. His grandfather is Pieter Delport along with his wife Dulce they settled in Durban, however it's thought that Pieter grew up in the Orange Free State and possibly lived in the Cape. He worked as a Police Officer. It is thought his mother was born in England, and we don't know anything more about the Carlson side.

We would like any help/advice/guidance possible to finding out more about these two families - any given would be greatly appreciated as we have no idea where to start.

It would be helpful if you could provide dates as Delport is a fairly common surname here, it would help to narrow the search.  Any additional info you may have will also help.
