GGGrandfather Woods
« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 20:16 BST (UK) »
It was suggested that I post this picture of my GG Grandfather on this forum. He served in the Civil War but I don't think this is a Civil War uniform. Can anyone perhaps give me some insight on the uniform? Thanks. Bill

hi bill
thanks for the pm ,
i,ve just done a google search on the civil war and as you can imagine loads of stuff show up for it and ancestry has civil war soldier records and profiles in there it shows 9 with the surname woods from penn so you hopefully should be able to trace gg grandads service time .

This man looks to be a veteran of the Civil War and the Medal on his lapel is Grand Army of the Republic, this organisation was formed in 1866 to assist veterans  of the conflict, it folded in 1949.
His cap has the laurel wreath of the GAR but strangely it has not the acronym GAR between the wreath.
The other medals I am not sure about,
So it looks like Mr Woods was a member of the GAR  if not an official.
He is not on the Medal of Honor list for that conflict.
