Joseph McDonnell, Brentwood, 1921
« on: Thursday 02 August 12 18:41 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I ordered the marriage certificate of Richard McDonnell to Mary Bridget Cullen in 1945 in Dublin. It states that Richard's father was Joseph McDonnell, merchant, and that Richard's address at time of marriage was Brentwood, Essex. Richard was born abt 1920.  He is now deceased as is Mary Bridget and their parents. I don't know if Richard was still living at home prior to marriage or if this Brentwood address is in connection to his services in the military.  It was a first marriage for both parties.
So I am wondering if someone can find Richard at home with his father Joseph in Brentwood, in 1921, 1931, or 1941. Or find Richard's birth to Joseph McDonnell? Anything that might help me.
Thank you
Peggy

hi peggy
i,ve looked in 2 sites for a birth in essex just in case he was a local man but nothing comes up on either for anywhere near 1920 .
also on the marriage cert does it give anything more specific than just brentwood for an address ? , also also if he was in the services i,d have thought something would have been on the cert to that effect but it,s still possible he could have been in the army or airforce as as there were airbases all over essex and also warley barracks was there as well .
it would need someone to look up the polling registers for that period to try and find either him or his parents .

Thank you, Trevor. the marriage certificate simply says residence at time of marriage, - Brentwood, Essex. Occupation says
soldier. Father's name - Joseph McDonnell, merchant. So no idea really where Richard was born. I know he was married in Dublin and died in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford where he and his wife Mary Bridget McDonnell had been living. I ordered his death certificate and it came in the name of Mcdonald but the date of death matches the date on the headstone. Actually, certificate says date of death Aug 22, 1993 and the date of registration was Aug 27, 1993. Headstone says Aug 27, 1993.
I wonder if obit might have more info. I have tried to get it with no luck. Are polling registers difficult to get hold of

hi peggy
i never thought to ask before but what evidence have you that joseph was in brentwood or even england only try this as a scenario richard is in warley barracks at the time of his marriage hence the brentwood connection but he marries in ireland and dies there so may be he was born there as well ,and joseph was never in england .

That is entirely possible, Trevor. Just trying to find out where he was born, etc, etc. As for Ireland, I don't know if he just went to live in his wife's hometown, or if he was from the area (Co. Wexford). One day.......
Thanks for your help
