William F. Scott, Sheriff Prince Edward Co, VA
« on: Friday 03 August 12 17:49 BST (UK) »
Would anyone have a William F. Scott(e) who was living in Prince Edward County, Virginia? William F. Scott was born in Virginia by 1814. His was recorded as a farmer (also sheriff). In 1850, his household included a Mary Meadows, age 74 (b. abt 1776) and his overseer, Thomas Biggers age 33 (b abt 1817).

I believe William Scott appears in the 1840 census and is listed in the 1860 census. I've lost track of him after 1860. A marriage record of one of his natural children, suggests that he was alive as late as 1867.

Hi - After 40 odd years or so of digging around in archives or the historic record, this is the most challenging research problem I yet to encounter.

Short answer, is no. The William F. Scott that I posted about was a white man born in 1814 in Prince Edward County, Virginia (per 1850 census).

William F. Scott was the natural father of a number of children born to Betsey Lyle between 1849 and about 1867. The date of 1867 is only an extrapolated date from the marriage record of one of his daughters. I haven't found any credible record of him in the 1870 census or available online sources for a death record, probate or possible military service.
