Martha Garlick Hadfield of Glossop
« on: Saturday 04 August 12 04:12 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find my maternal gggrandmother,Martha Garlick Hadfield in 1841.
She was born 17 Jan 1838 Glossop d/o Thomas Hadfield and Sarah Garlick.
She may have had a brother John (aged 2) as I think I have found Thomas and son John at Charles Lane Glossop in 1841.
Martha or her mother Sarah are not present.
Thomas was an innkeeper and the hotel may have been the "Greyhound".

Can someone please assist me in finding mother and infant child in 1841 ?

Martha married  my ggrandfather 27 Jun 1863 at the Weslyan Chapel Glossop.

They came to Australia 1864 arriving Maryborough Queensland.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Christening at Glossop Parish Church;-

Martha Garlick Hadfield  30.1.1838  dau of Thomas & Sarah
John Garlick Hadfield      26.6.1839  son of   "             "

Have you considered that Sarah may have died and Martha is possibly living with relatives?

Burial  at Glossop 19th May 1841 Sarah Hadfield aged 26
1841 Census was taken in June.

All the above can be seen on :-
www.familysearch.org.

This may be a possible:-
1841 Census HO107/184 F 41 Pg 16 Chapel en le Frith, Derbys
living with Jermiah & Hannah Garlick  a  Martha Garlick aged 3, she is not with them in 1851 Census.
Could be that the enumerator assumed Martha was a Garlick when it should have been Hadfield.

Think that Martha is back with Father in 1851 Census, did he take a second wife Mary Ann?

By 1861, Martha is living in Hadfield, Derbys Niece of Joe Lee  RG9/2551 F90 Pg 11.

You mention 1841 Census, there is a George Garlick also living with Thomas Hadfield, was he
the father of Sarah Garlick?

Hello spendlove.
Thank you for helping me.
You have done well.
I have Martha Garlick Hadfield born 17 Jan 1838 so this ties in with the Christening at Glossop Parish Church.
I had thought Sarah may have died and Martha could have been cared for by relatives in 1841.This is born out by the Glossop burial of Sarah 19 May 1841.
I note Free BMD Mar Qtr 1842 Vol 19 Page 441 at Hayfield equates to age 26.

I think it likely that it is her in 1841 at Chapel en le Frith aged 3 ,living with Jerimiah and Hannah Garlick. It would have been easy to have treated her as a Garlick rather than Hadfield.
I am going to try and establish if Jermiah and Hannah were related.

Thomas took a second wife Mary Ann Johnson 8 Dec 1844 at St Michaels Church,Ashton under Lyne.

I agree that Martha was living with the family of Joe Lee in 1861.

I believe the George Garlick you noticed in 1841 living with Thomas Hadfield was the father of Sarah.

Unless mistaken,I think they were at the Greyhound Hotel.

Many thanks
Rex

Hello again spendlove.
I think we agreed that Sarah Hadfield died 1841/1842.
There was a daughter Mary bpt 14 May 1841 and I think it likely she died young.
Free BMDs has several deaths for Mary Hadfield over the period 1842-1845.
There is also one at Chapel en le Frith.
Are you able to check this?

I think Thomas and his father in law may have been at the Greyhound in 1841.
Your help outstading.

Good morning spendlove
Unfortunately your "find" of Martha Garlick/Hadfield in 1841 with the family you suggested, did not check out.
There is a Martha Garlick (not Hadfield) born 1838 to that Garlick couple. She may have married John Fox in 1868.
So I am still trying to find infant Martha Hadfield.I am almost certain her mother died.
Martha married my Wyatt great grandfather.

Thanks for trying but I don't think that is the Martha Hadfield I am looking for.
I found a transcription (I think) of the page you have cited.
Does this match the detail you found:

Folio 34 Page 30  Queens Arms  HADFIELD  William  27  M  InnKeeper  House 135
