Hi, thanks for the reply. I have quite alot of info on the family.Michael joined the army again in about 1815,but was sent home ill and died in Aldershot army hospital around about 1916.His father was also called Michael who was born in Ireland he married a Cathrine Moore also born in Ireland. He lived in Whitechapel in 1851, he was an apprentice to a Patrick Kirby, proberley as a tailor. Then they moved to Ashton-under Lynne, lived there 1861.

Two children were  born there,a William born 1856 and a Thomas born 1860, there might have been more inbetween the years and died. At some time in 1861 they must have been living in Sheffield, because they had at least 5-6 more children.

John                 born 1861    Sheffield
James               born 1862    Sheffield
Michael             born 1864  ( my great-grandad) Sheffield
Joshep              born 1867    Sheffield
Margaret           born 1869    Sheffield
Marie                born 1871  ( not sure about this one, she died at a young age). Sheffield

Then as you might know Michael went on to have to have six children ?.

Emma              born 1880 (died young, not sure on this one)
John Henry       born 1883   Sheffield
Gertrude           born 1885   Sheffield
Florence            born 1888   Malta
William             born 1893    Malta
Alfred               born  1895   Hucknal Notts  (my granddad).

Some date's maybe a year out. I have some war records for Michael and Alfred.

Mick

Great info Mick! As a matter of interest did Michael (Alfred's dad) serve with any distinction in the army? Our family legend has it that Florence was made pregnant by a captain in the army. Seems like Michael is the army link rather than Florence's husband, but not sure what rank he would have been.

Hi Russel,Michael was in the Royal Berks Regiment, 1st battalion, they fought in the battle of Torfek. After that some were sent to Cyprus and some to Malta, he went to Malta, as far as I know he was only a private. PTE 1373.

He joined the Army Services Corps aged 52 on 26/07/1915, he was posted to france, he was sent home ill on 23/10/1915 and died 09/02/1916 of a heart attack I think.I dont know where he was buried. He was baptised Dec 18th at St Marie church Sheffield.

Florence was born in Coltonera police station Ricasoli Malta. She died Dec quarter 1945 aged 57, Henry Lister died March quarter 1951 aged 61. Maybe you could confirm this for me. The deaths that is,as I have a copy of Florence's birth certificate. If you want I could send some of the documents that I have, either on here or I could email you them.My email address is (*).

Some of the McCarthy's are buried in St Michaels Cem Rivilin Sheffield. As I only live in Mansfield Notts I intend to pay a vist there one day,so I can do some double checking. I dont know were Alfred was buried either, so if you find out let me know please.

Mick

Hi. If Florence was born in 1888 in Malta and Alfred was born 1895  in Hucknall Notts, Florence must have been with them as she would only be aged 7 at the time. So it must have been either when they lived at Dipton or when they moved back to Sheffield, maybe that's why they moved back.
