Displaying/Printing a large family tree
« on: Wednesday 08 August 12 14:11 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Does anybody have any ideas to show the family tree to relatives, preferably the tree would be on paper. However, all software I try would require too much paper and the tree would fill our village hall I think! So what have you done to make the tree easy to view?

Any ideas appreciated.

Jack

The problem with large trees is that you can overwhelm the viewer with the various offshoots etc.
You could cull it a bit & keep it to family only & have it printed by a professional printer who will have a roll feed printer for the purpose.
You could also split the families into names & have several smaller trees which are easier to print.
Less is more.

I firstly print off a direct line only chart, and add a reference number to each generation, you can also colour code each generation to make it easier to follow if you wish.

Then print off a single family group for each generation. Followed by family notes.
I don't print off my source information, that stays firmly in my software and home folders, besides only other FH enthusiasts are really interested in where you got the info.

As you say, its impossible to print off everyone in your tree, it would take too much paper and be too overwhelming and you might see some eyes start to glaze over... :P

Other than that, a professional FH printer can print off a chart on a large format printer (plotter)  or you can buy a blank family history chart and fill it in by hand.  Google to see what is available.

Thanks both of you. I think I will go with jc26red's idea - I would rather not pay to have it done
