As per “The Visitations of the County of Devon, Comprising The Heralds’ Visitations of 1531, 1564, & 1620 with additions” by J.L. Vivian (1895) page 638 ;
Walter de Ralegh, temp. Will. 2 and Hen.1 had two sons :-
Hugh de Ralegh . . . . who was granted the Manor of Nettlecombe
Richard de Ralegh, heir to his brother
and that Richard de Ralegh had two sons :-
William de Ralegh
Warine de Ralegh, to whom his Uncle Hugh, granted Nettlecombe.
That pedigree is similar to that, presented in “The History and Antiquities of the County of Somerset” Vol. III. by John Collinson, (1791) on pages 535 & 536.
VIVIAN presumed that Warine was the son of Richard. I hope to demonstrate that ;
Walter de Ralegh had four sons and that,
Warine, (whom received Nettlecombe from Hugh de Ralegh), was not the son of Richard.
Printed in “Collectanea Topographica et Genealogica.” Vol. II (1835) on pages 163 to 166 are 6 documents, described as “Charters relating to Nettlecombe, co. Somerset, and the families of MARESCHALL (Earls of Pembroke) and of Ralegh ; transcribed from the originals in the possession of Sir John TREVELYAN, bart.”
http://archive.org/stream/collectaneatopog02londuoft#page/163/mode/1upCharter I
- the granting of Nettlecombe, by John [MARESCHALL] son of Gilbert, to Hugh de Raleigh. It mentions John’s sons Gilbert, John, Walter & William
Charter II
- John MARESCHALL confirms the granting to Hugh de Raleigh
Charter III
- John MARESCHALL (the son of John) confirms the granting of Nettlecombe to Warine son of Warine de Raleigh
Charter IV
- William MARESCHALL (the son) confirms the granting of Nettlecombe to Warine son of Warine de Raleigh
Charter V
- the granting of Nettlecombe, by Hugh de Raleigh to Warine his nephew.
- witnessed by Hugh’s brother Richard (being Hugh’s heir), Hugh’s brother Walter and Hugh’s nephew Walter.
Charter VI
- Richard de Raleigh confirms the granting of Nettlecombe to Warine, his nephew.
- parties to the charter included Richard’s brother Hugh, plus Richard’s son William.
- witnessed by Richard’s brother Walter, Richard’s nephew Walter, Richard’s son William and Richard’s nephew Baldwin.
The above clearly identifies the granting of Nettlecombe to Warine who was :-
the son of Warine de Raleigh and
the nephew of both Hugh and Richard de Raleigh.
I presume that Hugh’s brother Warine was deceased, when Hugh granted Nettlecombe to nephew Warine.
I guess (and can not support it) that nephews Walter & Baldwin were the sons of Walter de Raleigh.
If I have misinterpreted anything, then please let me know, so that I can correct this,
