Lurgan Ancestry website
« on: Sunday 08 August 10 12:19 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have just bought the domain name of lurganancestry.com.

I would very much like to continue the work started by Martin McGoldrick who sadly is no longer with us. I can handle the technical side of the website, but if anyone has any information, suggestions, or ideas on how we can develop this project, I would be glad to hear from them. My GGGrandfather was from Lurgan, so I have a love and interest in that region. This a non profit project and will remain free to all as long as I have anything to do with it.

I look forward to hearing from any interested parties.

Best Wishes ~ Ken

Firstly a big thank you to all who have contacted me with offers of help. I have tried to categorise the kind of help we need on the project.

We need people on the ground taking photos both of the local area and gravestones. We need people to donate any old images of Lurgan and surrounding villages. We need people with any information on the history of Lurgan for the Time-Line section. We would like to start a Family Histories section, where people can submit the story of their family in Lurgan. We need researchers to find any old documents or lists of people living in Lurgan in the past. We need information on the graves of Lurgan men who died in both world wars, where they died, what battalion etc. We need collators and editors for all of the above areas. We need moderators for the forums and suggestions as to what topics are needed in the forums.

I'm sure there are 101 other things that I've forgotten, but that's all I can think of at the moment. You can contact me or send info to (*)

The website design and layout is now finished, so it's just a case of adding the data now. Anyone with any HTML. Flash, Java, PHP experience, who would like to help out would be welcomed.

I think Martin's original idea was for the community to be a part of the project as much  or as little as they wanted to and I would like to carry this on. So any help, however small would be very much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Ken

Just to add my support to Ken on this mammoth undertaking. Lurgan Ancestry was a great site back before so much other material became available online - Martin was ahead of his time in many respects and it was so sad when, after his passing, the site was unable to be continued.

Now, with you Ken at the helm, I trust it will once again be a great site and that you all your volunteers will build on the legacy and indeed further it in many ways.

May the project go from strength to strength.
